News: Men's Track and Field Score 3 Sprint Titles At SCC Finals, Take 3rd

The Pasadena City College men's track and field team may have only matched last year's third place finish at the South Coast Conference Prelims/Championships, but the reality is that the 2013 team has greatly improved in the sprint events.

PCC took third place with 140.5 points at the event held April 23 (prelims) and April 26 (finals) at Mt. San Antonio College. Cerritos (259.5 points) won the conference title while Mt. San Antonio was second (221).

The Lancers were led by a trio of champions Friday in Christian White, who won the 400 meter title at 47.60 seconds, Vivaswan Shetty, who grabbed the 200 meter title in 21.37, and Khaleel Green, who captured the 400 hurdles gold medal with his 54.36 mark. Caleb Wood won his second title of the meet when he took gold in the discus with a top throw of 145 feet, 7 inches. In all, the Lancers produced five conference champions.

White, who had held the top state mark at 47.44 performed at the Pasadena Games, is now No. 5 in the state rankings. He is only .12 of a second behind current leaders De'Shon Norris of Fullerton and Sacramento City's Jesse White (each 47.32).

Shetty (pictured) climbed to No. 9 in the 200 rankings while Green is 16th in a very tough field of 400 hurdlers.

Te'von Mitchell came up with his season-best time of 14.68 seconds to place third in the 110-meter hurdles. However, Mitchell is right in the mix in top state times, now at seventh. Shetty, a sophomore, placed third in the 100 dash with a PCC season best 10.84 seconds, but is not among the leaders (31st in state).

In the 4x400 relay, PCC was edged at the wire by Mt. SAC, 3:14.31 to the Lancers' season top mark of 3:14.60. Pasadena is now No. 5 in the state thanks to the racing of Bryant Johnson, Chineek Favors, Kameron Burch and White.

The Lancers raced a 2013 best in taking second in the 4x100 relay at 41.37 seconds (now No. 8 in the state, fifth in the region). Derrick Shepherd, Favors, Johnson and Keiton Winston ran the race. PCC has several options for the relay with Shetty now holding the Lancers' top 100 time and Shepherd right behind him at 10.88.

In the high jump, sophomore Steven Williams would be likely a conference champion in any other league but the South Coast. He placed second with a leap of 6-feet, 7.5 inches behind state leader and conference champ Adam Aguirre of Cerritos (6-9.5). Williams' best is 6-9 set a week earlier at the Beach Invitational while Aguirre's is a state best 6-9.75. The two will keep their rivalry going into SoCal and state.

"The big surprise for us was Shetty, who came up with two great sprints and shocked the field in the 200," PCC head coach Larry Wade said. "We're a bit of a mystery too when it comes to which one of our sprinters is going to come up with an exceptional race in any given meet. Christian White has been pretty consistent in the 400. Our relays will have to get better if we have any chance of getting a medal in those races at SoCal or state."

The Lancers take part in the Southern California Prelims on Saturday, May 4 at Antelope Valley College. Field events begin at 9 a.m. and track events start at 11:10 a.m.
