News: PCCs Don Eckmann Awarded 2013 State Classified Employee of the Year Award
Pasadena City College Facilities Services Supervisor Don Eckmann was selected as a 2013 California Community Colleges Classified Employee of the Year by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors. Eckmann and four others were honored at the May 7 board of governors meeting in Sacramento.
“I am very honored to receive this award,” Eckmann said. “I hope that I have contributed in some way to student success. Helping students is why we do what we do.”
Eckmann joined PCC in 1987. He was originally hired as a carpenter and was directly responsible for designing and building structures and classrooms. In 2000, he was promoted to the position of Facilities Services supervisor.
Students, faculty, staff and visitors to Pasadena City College can see Eckmann’s work all across campus, from the maintenance of the renowned mirror pools to the Child Development Center (CDC). Those who nominated Eckmann said he works diligently to make sure the campus is a beautiful and safe environment for everyone. He volunteers his time by assisting construction technology instructors, helping build birdhouses for the children in the CDC, and welcoming veterans at the airport as they return from deployment.
“Don’s leadership, his pledge to the community, and his desire to facilitate an environment conducive to learning, makes him a valuable member of our team,” said Rueben Smith, PCC Executive Director of Facilities Services. “It comes as no surprise to me that Don was honored with this award.”
Eckmann is also the 2012 recipient of the Pasadena City College Risser Award for Outstanding Support for Education.
The Classified Employee of the Year award has been given annually since 2009 to community college classified employees who demonstrate the highest level of commitment to professionalism and the community colleges. Recipients are nominated by members of their college or district community and endorsed by local boards of trustees. Award recipients are selected by representatives of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, and the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Recipients must have a record of outstanding performance on the job, as well as a record of active participation on campus and in their respective communities. Each recipient receives a $500 cash award and a commemorative plaque.
