News: Women's Soccer Comes Up Empty v. LA Pierce
Four games into the 2013 season, the Pasadena City College women's soccer team isn't pressing any panic buttons. The Lancers, however, are frustrated over their lack of scoring. For the third time this season, PCC was left scoreless as visiting Los Angeles Pierce won 1-0 Friday in a non-conference game at Robinson Stadium.
The Lancers (1-2-1) have more team points, three, than goals scored, one, this season. Team points are awarded two per victory and one per tie.
Against Pierce in the 63rd minute, the Brahmas' Melissa Galmez took a beautiful cross from the opposite right side by Shawnie Moore and fired in a shot from the goal-line past PCC frosh netminder Angie Ulmer for the game's only goal.
The Lancers had their opportunities, none better than in the 67th minute when freshman midfielder Sara Oceguera was stoned by Pierce goalie Jenna Koziol on a point-blank shot. In extra time, sophomore forward Cassandra Saavedra put a header on goal that nicked the left post.
"We really put pressure on Pierce over the last 30 minutes," said PCC head coach Reggie Rivas. "We've been pretty good controlling the ball, but when Pierce got its goal, we showed a sense of urgency that I hadn't seen in the other matches. We didn't score, but it wasn't like we weren't trying. Our girls played hard and that's all we can ask. We're going to find the back of that net soon and we are devoting are upcoming practices on shooting and better set up plays in the offensive zone."
On defense, Ulmer (South Pasadena High) made four saves in goal and had strong help all game by transfer midfielder Kaylin Richards and freshman defender Bailey Shaw (Monrovia High). Sophomore midfielder Lizbeth Rodriguez played well offensively and pushed the ball upfield in the last 15 minutes of the game.
The Lancers next play Friday, Sept. 20 in a 2 p.m. non-conference contest at Los Angeles Valley College.
