News: Flores Late Goal Gives Men's Soccer SCC-Opening Win
With the regulation 90 minutes played Tuesday, the Pasadena City College men's soccer team entered that referee-timed area called "injury time" or "stoppage time," the part of the contest that continues a game due to earlier injuries that halt play. The Lancers didn't know when the clock would officially expire when goalie Gaetano Perez took a free kick from midfield.
Perez floated it perfectly to a back-pedaling Luis Flores in the goalie box and the sophomore forward flicked a header for a shocking goal into the left corner of the net that snapped a 0-0 tie. The final whistle was blown just a few moments later as PCC drove away from El Camino College with a 1-0, South Coast Conference opening victory.
It was Flores' (pictured) team-leading sixth goal and it helped the Lancers to only their second victory in eight games this year (2-2-4).
El Camino outshot PCC, 21-10, and had its best scoring opportunity occur on a corner attempt late in the first half when freshman Guy Rappleya charged into the six-yard box and blasted a perfect header on net off a corner kick but Perez instinctively made the save, knocking the ball over the crossbar.
The sophomore Perez finished with 10 saves and the credit for the assist on the game-winning goal.
On Friday, October 4, the Lancers host East Los Angeles College in a 3 p.m. conference kick-off at Robinson Stadium.
