News: Women's Water Polo Looking To Improve
Following an 18-5, South Coast Conference loss Wednesday against visiting Chaffey College, the Pasadena City College women's water polo team is looking to shore up its defense and continue some recent encouraging signs on offense.
The Lancers (1-9) remain winless in SCC play at 0-4. However, the team is averaging better than seven goals per game.
In the Chaffey defeat, sophomore utility player Mariana Silva scored three goals while freshman center-forward Stephanie Velasco had her hands on all five scores (two goals, three assists). Silva added a team-high three steals. Both freshmen Katherine Kleinschmidt and Kendall Delgado picked up single assists. Both of PCC's first period goals were on power play advantages.
PCC goalie Alenoush Aslanin made four saves. For Chaffey, 12 different players scored at least one goal, led by three each from Jessica Bernal and Mandy Darafeev.
Although the team went 1-3 at the Cabrillo Tournament September 27-28, the Lancers scored 34 goals in four matches. In a 13-8 loss to Modesto, PCC scored six goals in the fourth quarter, the highest scoring total in a period this season. Caroline Liu netted four goals in a 15-8 defeat v. West Valley. Jazmine Hernandez posted three goals in a 15-7 loss to host Cabrillo. Aslanin made six saves and also had six steals and one assist.
The Lancers return to conference action next Wednesday, October 9 when they travel to face Cerritos College in a 3 p.m. match.
