News: One-Man Wrecking Crew For Moorpark In Football's 31-15 Loss

Watch Nick Davis run. Watch Nick Davis pass. That seemed to be the theme of Saturday night's SCFA National Northern Conference football game between visiting Pasadena City College and Moorpark College.

Davis passed for two touchdowns and ran for two others in totaling 339 yards of total offense as Moorpark handed PCC its seventh straight loss, 31-15. The Raiders signal caller bombed an 88-yard TD strike to Justin Coburn in the third quarter that gave his team a commanding 31-7 advantage with 4:13 left in the third quarter.

The Lancers (0-7, 0-3 in conference) rotated three quarterbacks with varied results. Starter Darrian Cazarin capped a 12-play, 73-yard drive in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown plunge that gave PCC an early 7-0 lead. Dashon Wade forced a fumble returned 21 yards by Kevin Tapia deep in Pasadena territory that started the series.

With just under six minutes left in the game, third-string QB Brandon Martinez tossed a 2-yard TD pass to receiver Darion Lewis for the Lancers' second touchdown. The score was set up on lineman Gus Ferrat's interception created on a tipped break-up by teammate DL Dalyou Pierson.

The Lancers top player may have been running back/punter Kitlo Meme. The freshman rushed for 68 yards in 10 carries and punted five times, averaging 35 yards a boot. Meme also scored on a 2-point conversion run as he had five Moorpark tacklers stunned by making a cut to the outside and crossing the end zone untouched.

Besides his short scoring pass, Martinez, seeing his first action of the year, added carries of 14 and 17 yards (finished with 22 net due to two sacks) at the end of the first half.

Three team turnovers hurt PCC, none more than a fumble at the Moorpark 1 late in the third quarter. The Lancers trailed 24-7 at that point. The Raiders intercepted two passes.

On defense, linebacker Roy Torres totaled a team-high 12 tackles while Tapia added 10 and lineman Serge Vita contributed 9. Pierson didn't make a sack but made three quarterback hurries, and fellow lineman Deshawn Jolley had five tackles and two hurries. As a team, the Lancers completed a spirited goal-line stand in the first quarter, stopping Moorpark twice on Davis sneaks at the 1.

Davis used crafty misdirections and play-action passes to get through the Lancers' defense. He finished with 75 yards rushing in 14 carries and completed 14 of 26 passes for 264 yards. Moorpark improved to 4-3 and won for the first time in NNC play at 1-2.

The game was stopped several times due to injuries, including a game-ending leg injury to top receiver/returner J. Turner Jackson. The freshman had to be carted off the field with his future playing status unknown at the time of this release. He earlier made the squad's largest offensive play on a 30-yard catch from Cazarin on the opening PCC series.

Penalties also marred the contest with flag-happy referees totaling 30 for a combined 235 yards (13 calls against PCC). There were more than 10 other penalties that were declined or off-setting and did not count.

The Lancers continue to seek their first win since last year when they make the long trek to Santa Maria for a contest v. Allan Hancock College. The Saturday, October 26 game will have an early 4 p.m. kickoff at Righetti High.
