News: State No. 20-Ranked Women's Volleyball Sweeps Harbor
At first glance, the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team appeared to have an easy time in sweeping Los Angeles Harbor College, 25-10, 25-13, 25-6, Wednesday evening at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. But the scores were a little deceiving as the defensive-minded Seahawks found ways to cause trouble for the Lancers.
During the first two sets of the South Coast Conference match, the state No. 20-ranked Lancers (9-8, 7-1) were hard-hitting as usual, but Harbor was quick to react on the other side of the net.
In the first game, Harbor (2-10, 1-7) kept PCC at arm’s length with aggressive play, trailing 15-10, but the Lancers were able to pull away with a 10-0 run to go up 1-0. During the second set, the Lancers were unable to find a rhythm and at one point allowed a 4-0 run by the Seahawks. PCC recovered for second game win with the help of sophomore Nora To’omalatai’s seven kills.
The third set is when PCC found its groove. Harbor crept behind the Lancers yet again but sophomore Thula Parks’ four kills in that game helped the Lancers adjust and get the boost they needed to dominate the floor. With the score at 7-4, the Lancers went on a skillful 18-2 run to finish off the Seahawks. PCC played error-free on its attack after seven unforced errors in the first two sets.
“Naturally, we were going to have some sort of letdown after our big win over El Camino last week,” said PCC interim head coach Bill Sanchez. “We made good transitions and I thought we played very well in the third set. Give Harbor credit for forcing us to pick up our attack.”
To'omalatai led the pack with 13 kills and five digs while Parks and freshman Angela Banuelos weren’t far behind with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Parks and freshman libero Victoria Arreola both led the team in digs with six each. Sophomore setter Tiffany Roesler totaled 40 assists and four digs.
The first-place Lancers (in a 3-way tie for the league lead) attempt to keep their 4-game win streak alive when they travel to take on the Vikings of Long Beach City College on Friday at 6 p.m.
