News: Football Loses Despite Green's Big Night

Local Pasadena High product and sophomore wide receiver Marcus Green had the biggest game of his Lancers' football career Saturday night in the Homecoming Game. But Green's burst of offense was not enough as Ventura handed Pasadena City College a 37-27 loss in a SCFA National Northern Conference contest at Robinson Stadium.

Green, a 5-foot-10, 165-pounder, pulled in eight catches for 149 yards, including TD receptions of 10 and 32 yards from quarterback Darrian Cazarin. He added three carries for 33 yards and 27 more yards on returns and finished with a PCC season-high 209 all-purpose yards.

As been a habit for the Lancers this year, the team could not stop the opposing team's quarterback. Ventura's Brad Odeman put on a clinic as he completed 23 of 42 passes for 353 yards. But it was Odeman's legs that did the damage as he called his own number for an amazing four touchdown runs of 6, 5, 1, and 8 yards. He hit Montre Lee for a 52-yard TD strike and Odeman finished with 404 yards of total offense (passing and rushing).

The Lancers (1-8 overall and 1-4 in conference) stayed with the Pirates (6-4, 4-2) in the first half and tied it at 21-21 when Cazarin found Cameron Washington for a 7-yard TD throw with 7:26 left before halftime. Cazarin completed a 2-point conversion pass to Micah Shirley.

PCC struggled offensively in the second half, failing twice to score points after reaching the red zone. But with 1:10 remaining, special teams player/receiver Darion Lewis blocked a Ventura punt then followed the bouncing ball right into the end zone for a PCC touchdown. The score cut the lead to eight.

Ventura, though, would answer on the ensuing extra point kick try when David Emanuel blocked Ricardo Cardenas' kick and then ran the final 80 yards for a 2-point conversion for the Pirates that capped their victory.

Cazarin completed 16 of 36 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Backup quarterback Jeremiah Hay, a listed defensive back, completed both of his passes for 52 yards, including a 35-yard bomb to Green. Running back Travion Boykins added 51 yards in nine carries as PCC's top ground gainer. Boykins also caught four passes for an additional 68 yards.

On defense, defensive back Sean Sykes (Pasadena High) made a 19-yard interception return while lineman Deshawn Jolley had four tackles and recovered a fumble. Safety Dashon Wade led PCC in overall tackles with a modest seven. Ventura lineman Ben Dixon made three sacks on Cazarin.

PCC closes the 2013 season next Saturday, Nov.  16 when the Lancers host Bakersfield College in a 4 p.m. kickoff.

"It's been a tough year, no question, but the win v. Allan Hancock and our efforts going back the past three games are very encouraging," said PCC head coach Fred Fimbres. "The offense played easily its best half this year in the opening two quarters v. Ventura. We then fell into some bad habits in the second half.  Let's see if we can play a complete 60 minutes in our finale.

PCC Gridiron Notes: A moment of silence was performed prior to the opening kickoff for Tom Williams, who has been PCC's game clock timer for football games going back to 1998. Williams died Wednesday following a short illness. The scoreboard time was ticked off 20 seconds to honor Williams by the press box crew...The team's 27 points broke a streak of six games in which PCC was limited to less than 20 points...Green now leads the Lancers in receiving, kick returns, punt returns, and all-purpose yardage....PCC's home losing streak is now at 11 straight games (one changed to a forfeit win from last year).
