News: Turnabout Is Fair Play, Women's Cagers Down Irvine At Glendale Tourney

Often after a tough loss, a team will hope for the opportunity to face that same opponent some time in the future. The Pasadena City College women's basketball team didn't have to wait a week to get another shot at Irvine Valley, a squad that downed the Lancers, 70-58, in the third place final of the PCC Rose City Classic.

In the first round of the Glendale College Shootout tournament on Friday, PCC turned the tables on the Lasers and posted a 69-66 victory. Pasadena (2-2) renews its rivalry with old playoff foe Ventura as they meet in the championship semifinals Saturday at 5 p.m.

Against Irvine Valley, the Lancers kept mistakes to a minimum, making just four turnovers in the first half in taking a 30-26 lead. Pasadena would pull ahead by as much as 18 points, 56-38 on a layup by Desiree Loving with nine minutes remaining.

Although Irvine rallied, the Lancers controlled most of the 40 minutes for a satisfying favor returned in beating the Lasers.

PCC's offense was spread out with four sophomore starters reaching double digits, led by Skai Thompson with 16 points. Loving had a huge performance, scoring 14 points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out six assists. Tyler Crockom (pictured) added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists and center Kaitlyn Parks contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Another returning sophomore, forward Averie-Alice Guzman, was a spark off the bench by scoring six points and grabbing four rebounds.

The Lancers shot well from the free throw line (19-of-25, 76 percent) and were more than adequate from the field, hitting 50 percent in the second half and 44.4 percent overall (24 made baskets in 54 attempts). IVC kept itself in the game with sharp free throw shooting, hitting 26 of 32 attempts (81.3 percent). PCC was whistled for 32 fouls compared to 20 on Irvine.
