News: Clark Excelling For PCC Women's Track/Field

Sophomore sprinter Breanna Clark ran the state's current fourth fastest time in the 400 meters Friday in the best showing by the Pasadena City College women's track and field team at the annual Occidental College Distance Carnival.

Clark raced a mark of 57.07 seconds, third best in a premier heat where she was the lone college racer against club sprinters. Teammate Denise Peterson was 21st overall (third in her heat) at 1:11.23. Clark did not race in the 100, an event where she is currently No. 12 in the state and sixth in Southern California (12.40).

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Christina Shamirian raced to the state's 12th best mark (12 minutes, 8. 4 seconds). She placed 19th overall at Oxy, fifth among community college racers against 4-year university participants.

Freshman Edna Bailon raced the state's sixth best time in the grueling 10,000 meters as she ran a mark of 40:29.80. Few college racers have run the event as the other five top state runners came out of the same race.

Sophomore Derrick Shepherd placed 10th overall in the 400 meters at 51.88 seconds and Anthony Carter was 19th in the 100 (11.64) for the PCC men's team at the Oxy Distance Carnival. Neither times made the state top 50.

It appears to be a lean year for the PCC men who only have two 10,000 meter runners listed in the state's top 50 event lists. However, Ruben Torres (34:36.74) in sixth and Russell Yu (35:36.05) in seventh only accounts for the Oxy race, the first this year where community college runners raced the event.
