Myron Tarkanian, who coached the last undefeated Pasadena City College football team in 1974, retired from the college after 37 years of teaching. The long-time physical education instructor was the administrative head coach for men’s soccer from 1998-2003 and head coach for three other programs—football and both men’s and women’s tennis.

He joined the college staff in 1968 and co-coached the football team with Harvey Hyde in both ’68 and 1969. He continued as an assistant coach the next several seasons before taking over sole head coaching duties from 1973-75. In 1974, PCC went a perfect 10-0 in the regular season, winning the Metropolitan Conference title and named the nation’s No. 1 team by JC Grid-Wire. The team finished undefeated at 10-0-1 as the team tied East LA, 14-14, in a state playoff first-round game, only to see East LA advance due to a tie-breaker based on total yards gained.

He finished with a 19-10-2 overall head-coaching record in football. Tarkanian went on to coach men’s tennis for more than 20 seasons, winning conference championships in 1979 (Metropolitan), 1992, and 1997 (South Coast Conference). In 1992, he was selected Coach of the Year by the SCC. He also spent several seasons coaching the women’s tennis team, including directing the Lancers to their only women’s tennis SCC title in 2000.

Tarkanian joined the men’s soccer program as an administrative head coach in 1998 and along with Director of Soccer Cherif Zein guided the Lancers to three consecutive SCC East Division championships from 1999-2001. The 2002 men’s soccer team finished tied for third in the state, making it to the State Final Four tournament.

A colorful personality and well-liked in the Physical Education division, Tarkanian is the younger brother of Jerry Tarkanian, the retired legendary NCAA men’s basketball coach who coached the 1967 PCC men’s basketball team to the state championship.

"This has been a tough off-season for our division with both Myron and George Terzian (men’s basketball coach) retiring," said PCC Athletic Director and P.E. Dean Skip Robinson. "Myron brought humor and a positive outlook to teaching and coaching at our college. He was a gracious winner as a coach."

Tarkanian, who lives with his family in Arcadia, was the most senior of PCC’s P.E. staff in years at the college. His 1974 football team will be honored in an 30-year reunion ceremony (at a date to be announced) during this coming football season.
