Hi, I'm Kaitlin Terpstra-Sweeney, host of the show "PCC Today" here on the campus of Pasadena City College it is such an exciting day here at PCC because it's the fifth annual "Welcome Day " today, we'll have an opportunity to speak with our brand new president, Dr. Perfumo we have a very special guest that will also be with us we'll also check out some of the booths and tables that tell us all about all the unique and wonderful things PCC has to offer there's some great live music going in the background behind me the band's going to perform the cheerleaders are going to perform there's going to be food and we're going to just have a wonderful end-of-summer day so stick with us and check out PCC together Hey, welcome back to "PCC Today " Im Juan Gutierrez, director of public of relations here at the college well, "Welcome Day" isn't just for incoming freshmen; it's also for incoming administrators and with me today is our new president, the 11th President of Pasadena City College, Dr. Paulette J. Perfumo thanks for spending some time with us, Dr. Perfumo thank you, Juan, I'm pleased to be here well, today is your first "Welcome Day" as well, so tell me what do you expect and what are you looking forward to? Well, I think is just a first for California Community Colleges, and the fact that we have an event like this that invite all of the coming--the returning and new students and their parents, family members, and the general community to come and spend time with us and get to have tours at the campus. They get to go to the bookstore, get all their books purchased, so they're ready when classes start on Monday they kick off the school year and we'll have our marching band, different musical groups playing and then we even have one of our great local radio stars coming and landing here at 10:00 in his helicopter so there's lots and lots of activities that I think truly welcome the community and all of our students to the campus and I just think it's a wonderful event so I look forward to being in the tent welcoming students and parents during the whole event now, as a new president, Im sure you have some goals for your academic year for your presidency could you share a few of those with us? Certainly one of the things I look forward to doing is being able to really reach out to our area high schools and junior highs and create bridge programs to really help bring students to our campus I want to have a president's ambassador program with our students going to the local schools and then I also want to also develop stronger partnerships with our business industry community so that we've got some private-public partnerships going on for the college and one of the things that I think a lot of folks don't know about Pasadena City College is that not only is it one of the three largest single community college districts in the united states it's known as the "Harvard of community colleges " and when I was in the state chancellor's office, we often, when testifying before the legislature, we'd use PCC as our example of the bright shining star in the state so this is a phenomenal college and I really want to help get that word out to the community I think not only do we have one of the highest transfer rates in the state, but we have phenomenal career-vocational programs here so students or returning adults that want to come in and take a short-term certificate program to redirect their career or maybe then continue on in another pathway, we have all Of those opportunities or even non-credit for those that want to come learn English or just have opportunities to improve computer skills, whatever it might be so I really want to make sure that message gets out to all of our community, so they really know what a crown jewel we have here absolutely PCC is sometimes the best-kept secret in the san gabriel valley so Im really happy and I know everyone here in campus is really happy that that's the priority of yours well, Dr. Perfumo, thank you for spending some time with us I know you're really busy today it's a little hectic you got to go out and introduce yourself to a lot of new people so I want to thank you, and welcome aboard thank you so much and don't you go away, because in a minute, we'll be talking to the organizers of "Welcome Day" and see what it takes to put an event like this together so stay tuned. Now Im standing here with Yoshi Yamato, coordinator of "Welcome Day " welcome thank you, Kaitlin now, we're here at the fifth annual "Welcome Day " compare and tell us a little bit the difference between today and the first "Welcome Day" you've had the first "Welcome Day," we only had three months to prepare, so we have no idea whether it was going to work or not, whether we're going to get any students or not and we had over a thousand students showed up so we were just ecstatic so it worked out well but it has grown over the years, and as you can see today, I think we're expecting more than 2,000 students today so it's a super event that sounds like a wonderful turn-out now, I know to make such a big event go off, you need countless volunteers tell us a little bit about that yeah we have over almost close to 300 volunteers and we don't have any paid staff doing this and everybody is volunteering from managers to classified to certificated and students and we even have students who came back, who came to the event a few years ago and it was so helpful to them they like to help us out, so they're here as well sounds like a fantastic way to just get everybody involved and working together tell me a little bit about how "Welcome Day" got started well, we were just sitting around the bunch of us is sitting around lunch table and I said, "you know, "we help students leave this place "by having a commencement ceremony, but we never welcomed them to PCC " and I said, "what a wonderful thing to do," to welcome them to the PCC community and help them have a good start at PCC by having them prepare with textbooks, the id cards, the parking permit, and know where their classrooms are and so, when the first day comes, they won't be late to class and it will help the instructors and it will help everybody so that's how it got started well, I know "Welcome Day" helped me when I first came to this school-- oh, really? --so Im sure it will help many, many others and, you know, PCC has a motto of helping students on the road to success that's right so how do you think "Welcome Day" will contribute to student success? Well, I can just share with you the data we have for students who attend "Welcome Day " their success rate is about 10 percent to 15 percent higher than students who don't attend "Welcome Day " so, you know, that tells us that "Welcome Day" does work in preparing a student for success well, this is a wonderful event, and thank you so much for your monumental activity in this event thank you thank you thank you, Kaitlin. Hey, and welcome back to "Welcome Day " Im Juan Gutierrez and here I have Dr. Jackie Jacobs, Vice President of Instruction Jackie, thanks for taking a moment to speak with us yes, sir Im delighted well, tell us a little bit from the instructional side what "Welcome Day" means well, actually, "Welcome Day" means a jump-start for our students it's just like, you know, we have-- preschoolers have head start to get off to a good start, and this is jump-start for our students we've figured the first week of school sometimes they come and they are lookin', they don't know where the room they are supposed to go to sometimes they miss half of the first session of the class and they need to go to the bookstore they need to get parking they need to do all of those things so we said, "if we can have a day "that they could come beforehand and do those things, "then the day they come "they're already familiar with the campus, the classroom "they've met some of their teachers "and then, they could just go to class and concentrate " also, some of them have no idea as to what they want to do and even classes that may be still open, so they get a chance to visit the various divisions all 13 of our divisions are represented, and they talk about majors and what's happening in the division's various programs so it's just a good day for them to be able to come and get a jump-start now with the fall semester beginning on august 27th, I know that instruction has done its very best to offer classes for the community and students who want to transfer, maybe a career in technical can you tell us a little bit about that? Yes well, we-- right now, we have classes left in most-- all of our areas we have a few that's-- but we're willing to even add classes if there's a great demand in certain areas and transfer-- we want them to get what they need in the technical, the engineering, especially in the technical areas, we have classes that we-- if we don't get students, we're going to be closing them so we're hoping that if there are students who are thinking about coming, today would be a good day for them to sign up well, a lot of classes are filling up, but there are a lot of spaces, Jackie said so if you haven't registered for PCC, please do so classes start on Monday Jackie, thanks for spending some time with us you're quite welcome. Hey, Im Kaitlin. We're back, and we are here at the telecommunications department, and Im gonna let these two gentlemen tell you a little bit about what they do. Hi Im Jeff Rudisill "Mr R" for my students and I teach students how to become professional audio people, audio professionals for, primarily, in radio, but not necessarily limited to radio and what our focus is, is to get students into programs trained on equipment so that they can get out there and work in the industry and hopefully, go on to another-- to a better career in academia as well. Perfect, perfect. Tell me what you do. I teach television operations at Pasadena City College Im fortunate enough to be able to do that I really enjoy what Im doing here our program, basically, it's too paths, both operations and productions, and we try to teach students skills that are industry-valued, skills that they'll be able to sell right away or transfer with some of the advance standing into a university but, well, I think the program is noted for, and what I would like it to be noted for is that we're the hands-on tv and radio place you wanna operate, you come to PCC you want to talk about it, well, in maybe some place else but here, we really operate and we have a ball you know, we're all collaborative and we're lucky 'cause we have fun our program is great I just can't tell you how much I love it how's that? Sounds great sounds like a great program, a ton of fun to be a part of thank you so much for being here today are you gonna take one of our courses, Kaitlin? I think Im trying to yes hi how are you, ms scott? Oh oh, so good to see you I see you're doing everything you should be doing yeah thank you well, Im here at the dance and theater department and so tell me about what you do? Well, I am the coordinator of the speech pathology assistant program, which is this, and that trains students to become an assistant to a speech pathologist one in six people in the united states have some sort of speech language or hearing disorder, so this is a very important program, I think but we have all these other wonderful programs in our division of Performing and Communication arts and this is our division dean, Dr. James Arnwine, a wonderful musician himself and led the tournament of roses marching band for how many years? Twenty-two years. Twenty-two years great we'll, thanks. So what-- so you're the dean of-- Performing and Communication Arts. Okay, so what all does that entail, all the things in that? It's music, theater, dance, television and radio, and speech, and speech-language pathology assistant program great well, it sounds like it covers a ton of great things thank you so much thank you good morning you look great well, thank you so tell me what you're doing here this morning this is the office of career and technical education, and we're responsible for all of the colleges workforce development programs we have 126 programs, and they're all outlined in this wonderful book i'd be more than happy to share with you-- thank you so much --okay? We're also responsible for administering all of the state funds for career and technical education millions of dollars for equipment, instructors, student aids, books, everything it's a lot of responsibility a lot of responsibility, but we love it good great part of my staff why don't you guys introduce yourselves? Hi, my name is Heather, Heather Banh yeah hi. Hi Im Mary -- Well, you guys are doing great, great work here. Thank you, thank you so much. Hey, right on, got some lollipops. Yeah, good morning, ladies. Why don't you tell me a little bit about what you're doing over here? Good morning we're from the Visual Arts and Media Studies division, and we're telling students all about our vocational programs and our other offerings in the studio areas and in journalism and all about the Courier. Here, we have a copy of the newspaper. Great so, here's the courier got to pick up a copy of this. How often does the courier come out? A good question. Once a week. Once a week? Okay, great. Thank you so much. We are promoting our intercollegiate sports in the physical education division. There are 16 of them we are letting the new students know about the P.E. classes that we offer, and just having fun welcoming all of the new students. Great well, your smiles are definitely welcoming. Thank you. Laughs. Thanks so much. Hi, and we're back Im standing here with Dr. Lisa Sugimoto, Vice President for student and learning services how are you today? I'm doing wonderfully thanks, Kaitlin it's good to see you today. It's good to see you too. Now tell me a little bit about the benefits of "Welcome Day" for the students attending Pasadena City College. Well, "Welcome Day" is an incredible opportunity for parents and students to get a real feel for the college anything we can do ahead of time allows them to see what is here, and gives them preparation, so they know where the classes are, where the parking is it makes it a lot easier it allows them to transition into school that's a great opportunity for students to get a head start into this school year and, you know, Im noticing there's so many staff and students around with green shirts on as we have here what are some of the roles that people are playing in this day? Well, we have people at tables that are introducing students and families to programs we also have tours that are going on, which is really wonderful for the students, so they're not worried the first day if they're going to make it to their class, and what building they're in so there are many, many things that are going on and we're certainly providing program information, financial aid information counselors are here today so we have a lot of great people who are helping our students get off to a great start for the fall term well, that definitely seems as though students and families and faculty, they get to meet each other, they get to settle into school a couple of days before school starting here. So thank you so much for your part in it, and for taking your time with us today. Well, thank you, Kaitlin and thank you for being here too. All right we're at the International Student Office. So, what does the International Student Office do? Okay, at the international office, we serve the international students. We admit international students, and also, we provide services to international students at PCC. And also, we help international students to come to the USA to study at PCC. What a great program to bring everyone together and I see flags from all around the world here, thank you so much. Here we are with the Library table, 'cause of our beautiful library here on campus. What are you ladies talking about today? Oh, we like to give away the library pencils and sharpeners and magnets with the library hours and we also have library technology program for library technicians so, yeah, it-- great so you're talking about the library and giving away cool, free stuff awesome and it says, "Shatford Library" on it so I'll be sharpening my pencils in style now magnets too. The faculty-- and magnets got to get one of everything. Thank you so much, ladies. You're welcome. Now Im standing with Dina Chase. Dina, tell me a little bit about what you do here at the college. Im the director of outreach degree and transfer services here at the college and I understand you work with the transfer center tell us a little bit more about what all the transfer center does. The transfer center is really a great place for students who are planning to transition from PCC to a four-year school. We have over 600 representative visits annually. And this is a great opportunity for students to be able to meet with the representatives from the schools to which they're planning to transfer the representatives will oftentimes help them identify courses that they need to take, help them with the requirements also, give them information on financial aid, housing, admissions procedures. Very important area on this campus. You know, I saw you before "Welcome Day" even started, working hard and setting up for today what all have you done to contribute to this great day? Well, this is the fifth annual "Welcome Day" here at PCC, and it's just a pleasure to work with all my colleagues the college really does come together and welcome students to a new semester, a new year it introduces them to all the services and programs that are here to help them succeed and so I feel very fortunate to be part of this great day. Well, we're fortunate to have you a part of it, and thank you so much for your time with us. Thank you. We're here at a very important table, financial aid and scholarship. Woo-hoo woo-hoo. All right so, tell me a little bit about what you guys are doing over here? Well, what we're doing, we're trying to increase our numbers in regards to financial aid we found out that a number of students don't even know what financial aid is all about we just had a young lady who came and thought it was welfare so we're trying to dispel some of those rumors that we have out there, and give out some free money, right, guys? Yeah, free money right on now, who qualifies for financial aid? Financial aid is basically designated to the low-income students who'd normally would not have a chance at educational opportunity so, if you're low income and you're-- well, low income and what else, guys? If you're a US citizen, or maybe if you have your green card, you can actually qualify for financial aid. Hm-hmm, very cool. So you aren't giving out free money today, but you are giving out penspens, highlighters and a lot of information different things here. Nice getting all set up, hugs giving out hugs getting all set up for school. Well, cool you guys are doing some good work here. Thank you, thank you. Bye bye now. Im back, and Im standing here with Dr. Scott Thayer. Dr. Thayer, tell me a little bit about what you do on this campus. Well, basically, Im the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and what we try to do is encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities outside of the classroom we have a student government for students-- to represent the students on campus, the 30,000 students we have we have clubs and organizations that promote activities throughout the year and so, we try to get students to have a good experience outside of the class as well as inside. Sounds great and I know that there are a ton of student volunteers here, just all over the campus, helping out what are some of the things they're doing today? Well, all the students are here to help with the setup, with the breakdown they're here to do tours our students are familiar with the campus, so what better way to expose new students to the campus than to have current students show them around and get them used to Pasadena City College that sounds great students are helping out, and administration is here, and everybody's coming together. Thanks so much, Dr Thayer. Thank you and we'll be right back. This is Associated Students, right? Mm-hmm all right, tell me who are you? Im Joshua Soto, Vice President of Student Services. Great and what are you guys doing today? I see you have a lot of papers out and candies, some motivational tactics over there what are you guys doing? We are advertising for our different committees for example, homecoming committee we have student services committee we also have blood drive and jobs, and we are telling kids that, you know, there's a variety of leadership-- student leadership here on campus and that-- for different variety of reasons so we're trying to influence kids to come join student government, and, you know, get their hands dirty in student government, and get more involved here at school. Great well, you guys do so much. Thank you so much. Okay we found our Associated Student President, Michael Sansosti. Hey, Michael, how are you? I'm good, how are you? Good, so tell me a little bit about what you guys are doing today we're trying to get students involved with clubs and activities. We have a lot of committee positions to be filled, so we're kinda out here talking to students. We hold sign up sheets and so far, students are really enthusiastic about it a lot of them wanna join clubs. Next week's club week so that's a really good thing students can come to our booth, and see what clubs we have and things like that. Cool, well, thank you so much. Sounds like you guys are busy, busy. Yeah thank you, take it easy. We're just looking, we're admiring all your flyers and your enthusiasm I saw you talking to some students so we're just wondering a little bit about the program. It's a first-year program. We really focus primarily on getting students acclimated to the first year African-American students, all the students of color at predominantly white institutions have a hard time transitioning, so that's what we're about we try to give a lot of structure during that first year so that second, third, and fourth year becomes easy and independent for students we want them to be globally competitive, and that's what we're about. Sounds like you guys offer great support, and they offer donut holes so what a great motivation to come to this table. Thank you so much we welcome both hungryBye. Great, tell me a little about-- a bit about what you guys are talking about today well, we're talking about English today and we're offering some of our literature classes we have a study in Oxford University. We have gothic literature, children's literature, comedy literature we also have a Mexico trip, and we've got "Inscape," which is our magazine that's put together by the students for the students they do all the writing, all the layout and we sell the new ones for $4, and the money goes to English student scholarships. So, how many can I sell you? We'll have to come back. That is so wonderful and you know what? I'm noticing this poster here, "America suffers when grammar suffers." So true. I love this, I need this for my bedroom I love this poster, okay, that's great. Well, thanks so much you guys have some great programs here. Thank you, thank you. We're here at the Extended Learning table. Tell me, what is Extended Learning? Extended Learning are classes designed for working adults who wanna continue their education but don't wanna take a full academic courses they're short-term courses in all areas such as dancing, foreign language. We do offer trips and tours, computer skills, and we have a lot of online classes, as well. We do offer classes for children as well. Welcome back and Im here with Commander Chuck street from KIIS-fm. Welcome. Thank you it's a pleasure to be here today. Well, it's great to have you. You just landed on campus you had an applause welcome. How was the-- how was the fly on the way over here? Quick. We came from Fullerton Airport. That's about an 18-minute flight, much better than driving but we appreciate the warm reception. Well, it's great we're all so excited to have you here and, Commander Chuck, I've know-- I know you've been at "Welcome Day" before. What's your connection to Pasadena City College? Well, you know, my father was a student here back in 1939, if you can believe that I remember several years ago, the first time we visited, I pointed that out in fact, I called my Dad on the cell phone I said, "guess where I am?" he says, "I haven't got a clue " well, I said, "I just landed my helicopter here at Pasadena City College where you went to college " and he was pretty thrilled. As a matter of fact when my Dad was here, Jackie Robinson was a student. Of course, Jackie Robinson went on to become a, you know, a fabulous Dodger. He was a fabulous athlete here, according to my Dad I guess he lettered in all of the sports and then there was some actor by the name of William Holden who was a student here as well, and they were here at the same time as my Dad so, he was pretty excited that I landed on the campus of Pasadena City College and Im excited too. Well, great it's kinda like coming home for you. It really is it's always thrill to come to Pasadena City College. That's great great. Well, I know you've got people who wanna meet you and take pictures with you, get autographs and all that, so we will let you go, but thank you so much for your time with us today. It's great to have you. Pleasure is all mine And we are back Im here with Dr. Perfumo and Commander Chuck from KIIS and so, tell me, what is the next event for us comin' up here? Well, as you know, we have a number of bands, our marching band, and our cheerleaders and a number of the clubs are out in the quad area and we have food, and we have a scavenger hunt so if the students go to all the areas on campus, get their books purchased, we hope, in the bookstore, and find all the different areas, and get that signed off, then they get to go over and have a nice barbecue lunch. And we have lots of fun activities still coming up, and lots of prizes and giveaways. Perfect and so, we also have Commander Chuck here to celebrate with our campus as we start school in a few days it's great to have you here as well. Well, we're thrilled to have Commander Chuck and that was so thoughtful of you to come in your helicopter and land on campus and give us a grand entrance and the reception, I think, spoke for itself everybody's so delighted to have you here. Oh, thank you-- thank you --so much for the warm reception. I know, as I was talking about my father being a student here back in 1939, and the fact that he had classmates like Jackie Robinson and William Holden. Now, you were just nodding with a big smile the whole time because that's part of the rich heritage here at Pasadena City College. So-- that's right --that's one of the reasons why we love to come here. Thank you so much. We really appreciate having you here. My pleasure and I wish you just a great 2008. Thank you. Thank you. Okay well, here we are we're about to go join in on the celebration with our new president and our very special guest thank you so much we'll be right back. fight fight fight come on, girls it's Pasa-- what? --dena oh yeah let's go go, go fight fight fight -- hey, welcome back to "PCC Today " well, it takes a lot of food to feed all the people here at "Welcome Day " and Im standing here with the director of food services, Ty Yu. Ty, thanks for spending some time with us you're welcome, Juan how are you? I'm doing well, especially with all these food around me. How much food does it take to feed everyone here? Fifteen hundred hotdogs. Fifteen hundred hotdogs? how long does it take to make food like that? Approximately three hours. We have a large staff, and I had to let you know that my staff is the one we really have to thank. They're the ones who are tirelessly grilling these hotdogs and they actually make a great quarter-pound hotdog and this hotdog, actually, is made just for our college and it is a quarter-pound, all-beef hotdog, and we call it a "Lancer Dog " so please, come on by and try a great hotdog while you're on campus. And again, we are here to serve you as dining services and, Juan, you know, I must-- now doing a commercial, so I shouldn't do this, but, you know, it's-- please, go ahead --I--no I just give it back to you but, you know, it's always great for "Welcome Day " we always wanna thank Yoshi, wanna thank the President, we wanna thank every single person that's here on this campus, serving you and the students, and making sure they feel welcome and know what they're doing every single day in this semester. Well, looks like you answered every question I had, so why don't we just dig in, huh? Yeah, I think so. All right thank you, enjoy. Hey, and welcome back. Well, we've had a lot of fun here at "Welcome Day." Beautiful weather. Students and parents getting together with faculty, and learning more about PCC. Who could ask for anything more? And I can tell you first hand, Juan, as a student, "Welcome Day" helps so much. And it really starts off the year to be a great year. Well, that's all the time we have.
