BIOL 1A PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGY - EVOLUTION, DIVERSITY, AND ECOLOGY 4 Units

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for Chem 1A.
The first course in a 3 course sequence for Biology majors (Biol 1ABC). The degree of rigor and amount of independent learning required are designed to meet the preparation needs of students transferring to upper division Biology study. Describes the scientific method, studies the history, evidence, and mechanisms of evolution, investigates the classification and diversity of living organisms, investigates the population, community, and ecosystem ecological principles with an emphasis on the connection between ecology and evolution. For majors in biological sciences but open to all qualified students. Recommended concurrent enrollment in Chem 1A. Total of 54 hours lecture and 72 hours laboratory. Transfer Credit: CSU, UC credit limitations. See counselor. Grading: Letter Grade or Pass/No Pass

Note: To enroll in BIOL 1B upon completion of BIOL 1A, students need CHEM 1A prerequisite. Therefore, to avoid a semester delay in the BIOL 1A-C sequence, students should be concurrently enrolled in CHEM 1A when taking BIOL 1A.
All sections of Biology 1A have field trips to local field sites during several of the lab periods to study local ecology. Students must provide their own transportation. Students must have Internet access as most of the course materials are available only online. Scholars Options available.

BIOL 1B PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGY - CELLULAR AND ORGANISMAL BIOLOGY 4 Units

Prerequisite(s): Biol 1A, Chem 1A.
The second course in a 3 course sequence for Biology majors (Biol 1ABC). The third course in a 3-course sequence for Biology majors (Biol 1ABC). Investigates biochemistry and molecular biology; covering bioenergetics, molecular genetics, cell signaling, cell reproduction, immunology, and cancer.
