Matriculation
What is matriculation?
We have found that students who succeed in college are those who
have clearly defined goals and who choose appropriate courses based
on a realistic assessment of their background and skills. Matriculation
is a continuing process to help you plan your education, choose
your classes, and successfully achieve your educational goals.
When you enroll at Pasadena City College, you are forming a partnership with
the college.
In this partnership, the college agrees to:
- Offer orientation programs to inform you about college programs,
services, policies, and procedures.
- Assess your skills, aptitudes, and interests in relation to
your specific educational goal.
- Counsel and advise you on individual educational planning,
academic requirements, course selection, and other subjects.
- Monitor your progress toward your educational goal.
You, in turn, agree to take responsibility for your own educational
life, which means you agree to:
- Declare a specific educational goal (e.g., AA degree, transfer,
vocational certificate) by the end of the semester after which
you complete 12 units of degree-applicable work. (You are free
to change your educational goal at any time, as long as you notify
the college of the change.)
- Participate actively in counseling and advisement as recommended
by the college.
- Gather information and seek support services as you need them
to make responsible decisions about your educational program.
- Accept the responsibility for the consequences of your educational
decisions.
- Attend your classes diligently and complete your assigned class
work.
- Complete your courses and maintain progress toward your educational
goal.
Who participates in matriculation?Depending on your background and educational goals, you may
be exempt from some parts of the matriculation process. The following
will help you decide which parts of matriculation apply to you.
Even if you are exempt from a given matriculation component,
you may participate in it if you wish.
Admission
All students must file an application with the college. No one is
exempt.
Orientation
Orientation is a valuable experience. You don’t need to attend
the college orientation if any of the following describes you:
- Already have an associate or higher degree from a regionally
accredited educational institution.
- Are currently enrolled at a four-year college or university.
- Are currently enrolled in the 12th grade or below AND will
enroll in nine or fewer units at PCC.
- Have an educational goal of “educational development/personal
development/interest” AND will enroll in six or fewer units.
- Were in attendance within the past two semesters.
Counseling and Assessment
If you are in good standing, are not enrolled in pre-collegiate
basic skills courses, are not seeking admission to a selective program,
and meet either one of the following criteria, you are exempt from
both the counseling/advisement and assessment components:
- Have a bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally
accredited educational institution; or
- Have an educational goal of “educational development/personal
development/interest” AND enroll in courses with no s
AND enroll in six units or fewer.
Testing
Placement testing, one part of the assessment process, may be waived
if you have a recent comparable or equivalent test score which the
college accepts.
Matriculation Rights
In addition to your responsibilities, you have certain rights:
- You may file the “Pasadena City College Prerequisite
/Corequisite / Enrollment Limitation Challenge,” with supporting
documentation, if you believe one or more of the following:
- You have the knowledge or ability to succeed in the course
or program despite not meeting the prerequisite or corequisite.
- You will be subject to undue delay in attaining the goal
of your educational plan because of the enrollment limitation,
or because the prerequisite or corequisite course has not
been made reasonably available.
- The prerequisite, corequisite, or enrollment limitation
has not been established in accordance with applicable PCC
policies and procedures.
- The prerequisite or corequisite is in violation of Title
5, Sections 55200-55202 of the California Code of Regulations.
- The prerequisite, corequisite, or enrollment limitation
is either unlawfully discriminatory or is being applied in
an unlawfully discriminatory manner.
Prerequsite Challenge forms are available online or in the Counseling office (Room
L104), Registration office (Room L113), and the Advisement Center
(Room L103). You bear the initial burden of showing that grounds
exist for this challenge. Your challenge will be resolved in
a timely manner, and if it is upheld, you will be permitted
to enroll in the course or program in question provided that
space was available at the time the challenge was filed. It
is to your advantage to file the form as soon as you become
aware of the alleged grounds for the challenge. See
the Challenge form itself for more detailed information and
required procedures.
-
If you believe some other violation of Subchapter 6, Chapter
6,
Division 6 of Title 5, California Code of Regulations has
occurred, you may file a Student Petition with supporting documentation
in Room L112.
