DEFINITION

The Network Administrator, under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Computing Services, designs and maintains the District’s integrated data and voice system that consists of core, distribution and edge switches; wireless access devices and controllers; routers; firewalls; other network appliances; inside and outside cable plant, including standard analog circuits to T1 and PRI services from local- and long-distance providers; telephone/fax devices; voice-mail; call accounting; and E911.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  1. In coordination with the District’s Help Desk, provides the faculty and staff with excellent customer service.
  2. Designs and upgrades the District’s integrated data and voice system.
  3. Maintains the District’s integrated data and voice system.
  4. Provides security services for the District’s integrated data and voice system.
  5. Provides disaster recovery services for the District’s integrated data and voice system.
  6. Creates and maintains documentation for the District’s integrated data and voice system.
  7. Provides faculty and staff with training on the District’s integrated data and voice system.
  8. May assist with the supervision of hourly unclassified and student workers.
  9. At the request of the Assistant Dean of Computing Services, performs a variety of unscheduled duties normally and traditionally performed by a Network Administrator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Minimum of AA/AS degree in an information technology related field and one year of work experience related to the duties of a Network Administrator; or industry standard network administrator certification and two years of work experience related to the duties of a Network Administrator; or three years of work experience related to the duties of a Network Administrator.

Knowledge and Abilities:  Ability to provide excellent customer service and work as a member of a team; knowledge and ability to design and maintain an industry standard integrated data and voice system consisting of core, distribution and edge switches; wireless access devices and controllers; routers; firewalls; other network appliances; inside and outside cable plant, including standard analog circuits to T1 and PRI services from local and long distance providers; telephone/fax devices; voice-mail; call accounting; and E911; use industry standard network diagnostic equipment and software; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; plan and work independently; coordinate and supervise the work of others; maintain working relationships with individuals, department, and vendors.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced academic degrees in an information technology related field and/or related professional certifications.  Experience with designing and maintaining an integrated data and voice system consisting of Nortel data and voice equipment.  Knowledge of the following concepts: IDS; IPS, Kerberos, RADIUS, SSH, IPsec, ISAKMP, TLS, Socks, VOIP, VLANS, 802.1p, 802.1q, QOS, Sub-netting, IP networking, WANS, and SIP.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Seeing to inspect written documents, communicate with District staff, sitting for extended periods of time, bending, kneeling and reaching to retrieve and file records, and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard and other office equipment.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:  One year
