DEFINITION
Under supervision of a position designated as management by the Board of Trustees, performs routine cleaning work and movement of furniture and equipment in campus buildings; performs occasional uncomplicated maintenance tasks; performs related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from a supervisor or other appropriately designated management classification. Will not act in the capacity of a supervisor but may be required to lead other staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
The custodian classification is a multiposition classification. Positions within the classification perform duties which differ in frequency and importance from position to position. The following duties are used as examples and are not meant to be all inclusive:
- Dusts, sweeps, cleans, and mops floors in classrooms, meeting rooms, halls, dining halls, labs, gyms, and offices. Cleans equipment in classrooms.
- Cleans, mops, and services shower and locker rooms, fountains, and toilet rooms; fills dispensers and replaces supplies.
- Cleans blackboards and erasers.
- In some circumstances, works cooperatively with others.
- Sweeps, scrubs, and waxes concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors; washes windows.
- Vacuums rugs and carpets, and shampoos or spot cleans carpets as necessary.
- Locks and unlocks doors, windows, and gates.
- Raises, lowers, and cases flags as necessary.
- Gathers and disposes of rubbish, paper, leaves and debris; empties and washes wastepaper baskets and containers; empties trash receptacles in classrooms, offices, and restrooms.
- Moves furniture and arranges tables, chairs, and equipment according to a designated plan; arranges furniture for next day’s class.
- Sweeps grass clippings, leaves, and dirt from an assigned area.
- Takes emergency action and reports problems relating to safety hazards.
- Checks fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and hoses; keeps fire exits accessible.
- Changes light bulbs and light tubes, as needed.
- Provides maintenance information regarding college facilities.
- May supervise tasks of another worker for cleaning a specific area, but does not become supervisor of this employee with full responsibility for his/her performance on a continuous basis.
- At the request of a supervisor, performs a variety of unscheduled duties normally and traditionally performed by a Custodian.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Must be able to read time sheets, assignment request forms, and cleaning product labels.
- Must be able to write legible notes to supervisor.
- Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written directions in English.
- Must be able to work cooperatively with others and interact with a wide variety of people.
- Must have at least one year of verifiable, successful custodial experience.
- Must be able to operate power cleaning equipment such as sweepers, scrubbers, shampoo machines, vacuum cleaners, etc.
- Must possess a valid California Driver License.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to work occasional overtime, irregular hours, evenings, and weekends with additional compensation.
- Willingness to perform routine repetitive duties to completion.
- Willingness to attend in-service training.
- Willingness to assist in the training of other classified and student employees.
- Willingness to travel locally.
- Willingness to work at any employer location or be reassigned.
- Willingness to attend local custodial seminars or demonstrations.

A pre-employment physical examination is required. Cost of physical will be paid by Pasadena City College.
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
- Knowledge of safe and appropriate cleaning solution mixtures used in cleaning building surfaces and items of furniture.
- Knowledge of floor maintenance techniques.
Abilities to:
- Attend various seminars/coursework in the custodial maintenance field.
- Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
- Identify and clean stains of differing types.
- Detect unsafe conditions.
- Calculate proper proportions.
- Keep on schedules for regular cleaning of all facilities assigned.
- Lift, carry, climb, and perform heavy physical labor.
- Move furniture.
- Install proper lights.
- Work with multiethnic environment.
- Work under the following adverse or potentially hazardous conditions: fumes, heat, dampness, dust, odor, dark, high altitude (40 ft.), vibration, confined space, long periods of time alone, among mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards, outdoors in adverse weather.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various District and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 75 pounds, walk and stand for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of hand-power tools, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, and kneeling or crouching.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
