Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday is a tribute to family and friends who have passed away. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using pictures, sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Scholars trace the origins of this celebration to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Michtecachihuatl. Rituals celebrating this tradition have been observed as long ago as 2,500 to 3,000 years.
The purpose of this event is to raise funds to support our noncredit students. Our students are not eligible for state or federal financial aid but have financial need equal to or exceeding those of credit students.

Six Students from CEC were honored by receiving scholarships on May 16, 2012 during TABE's 34th Annual Scholarships Awards Breakfast. The students shared with us some of their educational experiences while attending CEC.
"My educational goal is to complete the Business Office Systems Certificate Program. I have always struggled with basic English and this program has helped me with the English and writing aspect of Business Communication."
"My educational goal is to start a career in "Computer technology" and continue my education at PCC to further my education. I have faith in myself and study hard and I don't worry about minor things. I want to work towards the things I'm interested in like computers and photography."
" My plans are to complete all requirements at PCC to be a nurse and I will transfer later. English is not my first language, so I had to start with ESL Classes. I have finished my Nursing Assistant Class, and I am now a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant). My future plans are to become a Licensed Nurse and also a Sound Engineer."
"My educational goal is to complete 1600 hours in the PCC Cosmetology Program to obtain my Cosmetology License. Since I have attended CEC, I have achieved many new skills which led me to enter hair competitions and won 1st place at the S.I.B.E. Hair Show. My goals are to master my skill, work in a salon, and eventually own a chain of salons. Then hopefully become an instructor and mentor young individuals, such as myself, to achieve their dreams and goals."
"My educational goal is to obtain a license in Cosmetology, while taking as much knowledge as possible with outstanding grades. My career goals are to graduate Cosmetology School and start make-up school with hopes of becoming a celebrity hair & makeup artist."
