Men's Hoops Hits Century Mark To Open Home/Kennedy Classic Opener
For the sixth time in seven seasons under head coach Michael Swanegan, the Pasadena City College men's basketball team reached the century mark in points as the Lancers trounced the Occidental JV team, 101-60, Friday night. It was PCC's home opener at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium and part of the first round of the 6-team, round-robin John J. Kennedy Thanksgiving Classic.
PCC improved to 5-2 as five Lancers reached double digits in scoring and 13 of the team's 14-player roster made at least one basket. The Lancers converted an outstanding 59.5 percent from the field (44 of 74 shots).
Freshman guard Adrian Miles got things going with eight straight points, including a pair of 3s for an early 8-0 lead. Frosh guard Kent Iima sank a trey that gave PCC a 51-32 lead by halftime. A Jonathan Henderson three helped the Lancers to their biggest lead, 45 points, 91-46 with 6:38 left.
Overall, sophomore forward Taj Spencer scored 20 points (9-for-12 from the floor) and blocked three shots. Sophomore forward Bryce Clifton made all seven of his field goal attempts for 14 points. Sophomore point guard Jeffrey Dockett scored 10 points and dished out a team season-high 11 assists.
Sophomore guard Brandon Joseph contributed 10 points (5-for-6 from the field) and six rebounds while Miles added 11 points. Starting center Frank Oyalade grabbed eight rebounds (four points). Off the bench, sophomore forward Rashad Smith and first-year guard Curtis Moore each scored eight points while Henderson (six assists) and Iima tallied five points each. Kalen Verhoeven, Marsalis Ellison and Brand Croom also made baskets.
In other Kennedy Classic first round games, Javon Rabone scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help Ventura down Barstow, 87-66, and Aaron Cheatum scored 15 points to help East Los Angeles defeat San Bernardino Valley, 53-46,
Tonight, PCC hosts Barstow at 6 p.m. That follows contests between East LA and Occidental (2 p.m.) and Ventura v. San Bernardino Valley (4 p.m.).
