PCC in the News News: Pasadena City College Student Newspaper Picks Up Journalism AwardsThe Courier, the official student newspaper of Pasadena City College, was recently honored with a General Excellence award by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. The General Excellence award is based on content, writing quality, design, typography, photography, and layout of three consecutive editions of the paper. Additionally, PCC students were honored for their work on The Courier in the categories of critical review, news feature, editorial writing, front page layout, inside page layout, and opinions. Spotlight magazine, an annual publication written, designed, and produced by Journalism Department students, was also honored with awards for magazine cover, line illustration, photo essay, and profile feature story. Lastly, two PCC students were presented with awards for their journalism performances at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Southern California Regional Convention. More than 400 students from 27 community college journalism programs attended the two-day gathering at CSU Fullerton in October. Barbara Beaser, the current Editor-in-Chief of The Courier, won first place in the News Story category. Former chief photographer Daniel Lottes won first place in the Sports Action Photography category.
