News: Replica 1938 PJC Baseball Tops To Be Worn In Jackie Robinson's Honor Feb. 28
As part of Pasadena City College's celebration of Black History Month, the Lancers baseball team will honor the college's greatest alumnus--Baseball Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson--by wearing special replica jerseys of Robinson's 1938 Pasadena Junior College team on Tuesday, Feb. 28 for its game against Irvine Valley College.
The team will hold a 2 p.m. ceremony prior to the game held at Brookside Park's Jackie Robinson Memorial Field. Kathy Robinson Young, the niece of the late Robinson and the daughter of Jackie's brother, Olympic track medalist Mack Robinson, will be present and give a short speech in representing the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
Robinson was a four-sport star at PJC from 1937-39. In 1938, he was the region baseball MVP in helping Pasadena win the Metropolitan Conference championship. Robinson went on to break the "color barrier" in modern-day professional sports in 1947, becoming a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was an immediate hit on the field, earning MLB's first Rookie of the Year Award, an honor later named after him.
In his 10-year career with the Dodgers, he was a six-time, National League All-Star, winning the league MVP award in 1949. In 1955, he helped Brooklyn win the World Series title. An electrifying player, his speed on the basepaths was legendary. He stole home 19 times in his career. Robinson was inducted in the MLB Hall of Fame in 1962. Robinson passed away in 1972.
In 1997, his pro number of 42 was retired throughout Major League Baseball. Every season on April 15, the anniversary of his first MLB game, big league players honor his memory by wearing No. 42 jerseys. In 2005, Robinson was honored with the nation's highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal.
Voted among the top 15 of the 20th Century's greatest athletes by ESPN, Robinson is a charter member of the PCC Sports Hall of Fame. A bronze bust in his likeness is part of the college's Court of Champions. Three of PCC's sports homes of play are named after Robinson, including Robinson Park, the team's off-campus home softball field, and Robinson Stadium, the on-campus football/soccer facility named after both of the Robinson brothers.
Robinson is also a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, the California Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame, and the California State Hall of Fame.
"When you try on one of these flannel tops, you really feel like you're traveling back in time," said PCC baseball head coach Evan O'Meara. "Jackie Robinson's name is on our home field and I can't think of a better way to honor this legend than to see today's players wear the same type of jerseys he wore back in his PJC days."
The jerseys were custom ordered through Ebbets Field Flannels, a company that specializes in authentic throw-back attire, located in Seattle, Wash.
Jackie Robinson Memorial Field is located just a short walk from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
