PCC in the News
News: Former PCC Student Takes To The Airwaves
You don’t have to go anywhere to catch Pasadena City College’s newest student success: he’s on the radio every Sunday night from 10 p.m. to midnight on LA’s Latino 96.3 FM.
Mike Estrada, who started at PCC in 2008, is now a producer in the production department for the radio stations Latino 96.3 and La Raza 97.9 FM, and an on-air talent. And he credits his success to PCC’s Television/Radio program, and instructor Scott Carter.
“When I went to PCC I had an idea that I would take it seriously and get a job in radio,” Estrada said. “And then I met Scott Carter, who had been an on-air personality, a professional, and I thought, I want that to be me: accomplished and successful.”
This summer marks Estrada’s third year at Latino 96.3 FM. Starting as an intern, he was hired immediately after the internship was over. Three months later, he was promoted.
“I liked PCC because it was like a job,” he said. “They’re molding you to be a professional. You learn the things you need to know for the real world. So when I got there, the things that I was capable of—that was my way in.”
Carter, an adjunct professor, has worked in radio as on-air talent and behind the scenes, and instills in his students the importance of professionalism and the skills needed to achieve it.
“He learned what we taught,” Carter said. “How to do the job, how to start, how to work your way up, and always working to improve. And this is just the beginning of his on-air career.”
Estrada is an only child, raised by a single mother. He acknowledges the challenges he faced getting to where he is now.
“I had a lot of things working against me,” he said. “But coming from PCC helped a lot. I have to give a big, big thank you to Scott. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be where I am.”
Estrada was able to land the internship through PCC, and now he has his own interns.
“The interns that come from PCC, I can definitely tell the difference,” he said. “They know how to board up, they know how to edit. They’re professional already.”
Catch Estrada Sunday nights at 10 p.m. on Latino 96.3 FM!
