News: PCC Speech and Debate Team Ranks 8th in State
Pasadena City College’s Speech and Debate Team placed 8th at the California Community College Forensics Association (CCCFA) Speech and Debate Tournament March 13-17 at Moorpark College.
Thirty-one community colleges participated in the state championship, with 159 debate teams and 561 individual events.
“This was a difficult tournament,” said Instructor Cindy Phu. “We are very happy with these results and are very proud of our students. They have worked really hard.”
Overall, PCC left the state championship with 14 medals. Additionally, Assistant Professor and Coach Stephanie Fleming won the 2013 CCCFA President’s Service Award for her efforts in supporting the state association.
Four students came home with gold medals. Anna Yan won for Communication Analysis, Persuasive Speaking and Informative Speaking. Ricardo Lopez and Urian D’Silva both won for Prose Interpretation, and Kevin Cheairs won for Dramatic Interpretation.
Three students won bronze. Alayna Leibman won for Prose Interpretation, Sarah Kwon won for both for Informative Speaking and Persuasive Speaking, and Vanessa Giles won for Prose Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation.
Additionally, four students took home silver medals. Alayna Leibman and Tory Tunzi won for Duo Interpretation, and Nick Bruno and Vanessa Giles both won for Poetry Interpretation.
PCC’s Team is currently preparing for the National Phi Rho Pi Speech and Debate Tournament on April 14-21 in Woodland Hills, Calif.
