News: English Division to Receive Donation to Help Launch Writer In Residence Program
The Pasadena Senior Center, in conjunction with the Pasadena Festival of Women Authors, will donate $2,000 to the Pasadena City College English Division on March 3. The donation will help launch a Writer In Residence program for PCC beginning this fall.
The donation will be presented to the division by Akila Gibbs, the executive director of the Pasadena Senior Center.
“The English Division is very excited about this,” said Amy Ulmer, dean of the PCC English Division. “We are extremely honored that the festival is giving us this donation. It is going to affect a lot of students here.”
The Writer In Residence program would invite a local female author for a three-day visit to PCC. The author would then meet with creative writing classes, lead writing workshops, collaborate with faculty, and have a reading of her work.
“We are in the planning stages and hope to have the writer here in the fall of 2012,” Ulmer said.
This is the fourth annual Pasadena Festival of Women Authors. Over the years, the festival has raised as much as $24,000 for the Pasadena Senior Center. It has also drawn authors such as Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey, Marisa Silver, and Attica Locke. This year, the festival will include authors Heidi Durrow, Fannie Flagg, Michelle Huneven, and Susan Straight.
