News: Men's Basketball Settle For 4th At Imperial Valley Tourney
The Pasadena City College men's basketball team finished the 2012 portion of the 2012-13 season with a fourth place finish at the Imperial Valley Holiday Tournament Dec. 28-30. The Lancers closed out pre-conference action at 4-9.
In the third place game, Cuyamaca went on a 17-6 run early in the second half en route to defeating the Lancers, 76-69. Freshman guard Jeffrey Dockett scored his season high of 21 points while sophomore guard Evan Brooks had 18 points. Letterman guard Chris Smith added 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Gary Matthews tallied 10 points.
On Saturday, PCC downed College of the Desert, 70-61, as the Lancers made 14 steals and forced the Roadrunners into 27 turnovers. Dockett (pictured) pumped in 18 points and passed out five assists. Sophomore guard Mike Swanegan also poured in 18 points. Matthews tacked on 12 points and freshman forward Bryce Clifton scored 10.
In the tourney opener Friday, Fullerton edged out the Lancers, 76-73. Matthews led PCC with 19 points plus four assists and two steals. Swanegan contributed 13 points, three assists and three steals.
"We've tried different combinations, but we're simply not getting production from several of our returning sophomores," said PCC head coach Michael Swanegan. "These are players who played on a winning team as freshman (16-12). I'm waiting for them to wake up and join the others who are playing hard and trying to help us. No more excuses for us. It's come together now or we're in for a tough haul in conference."
Pasadena has yet to win two games in a row and is 0-4 when following a win.
The Lancers will finally play their home opener and South Coast Conference opening game on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when they face Los Angeles Southwest College in a 5 p.m. tip-off at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. The HP Gym floor has been completely resurfaced and has a new look that will be viewed by fans for the first time against the Cougars.
