News: Badminton At Grossmont Tournament: Ortiz Takes Singles, Teams With Liew To Win Doubles Titles
She was the first CCCAA state singles champion in Pasadena City College women's badminton history last season. She earned the PCC Women's Athlete of the Year for the 2011-2012 sports season. And that was as a freshman. So now a sophomore, Angie Ortiz is looking for what she can do as an encore.
Ortiz captured the singles title and partnered with Lancers' freshman Alice Liew (Mark Keppel High) to take the doubles championship at the 2013-season opening Grossmont College Individual Tournament held Friday.
Ortiz plowed through four opponents, all players from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC). In the championship singles match, she defeated Thao Nguyen of San Diego City College, 21-12, 21-17.
Her toughest match was in the semifinals when she recorded a 21-16, 21-18 triumph over SDCC's Darby Ruptat. In the quarterfinals, she knocked off Emily Ong of San Diego Mesa, 21-7, 21-12, and in round 1, she disposed of San Diego City's Cassandra Ka, 21-11, 21-7.
"Angie put on a clinic, plain and simple," said PCC head coach Bill Sanchez, in his sixth season in charge of the program. "She had to really fight hard to win the state title last year even though she was not the favorite going into the championships. Now, she's got a target on her jersey, and she knows that opponents will be gunning to beat her. Her play here at Grossmont is a great indicator that she's ready for the challenge."
PCC opens 2013 dual match play on Friday, March 8 when it travels to face De Anza College in a 2 p.m. match in Cupertino (Northern California). The four-time defending South Coast Conference champion Lancers will open league play on Wednesday, March 13 at El Camino College.
