The Pasadena City College men's and women's track and field teams positioned themselves with their performances Saturday at the Southern California Prelims meet held at Antelope Valley College. The SoCal Championships will take place at AVC next Saturday, May 11.

In the women's competition, PCC's state top sprinter Omhunique Browne (San Marino High) had the fastest times in qualifying for both the 100 meters (modest 12.20 seconds) and 200 meters (24.96, also far from her leading mark of 23.46 set at the South Coast Conference Championships).

The Lancers won their heat No. 2 and qualified for the finals at third overall with a time of 4:03 flat. The unit consisted of Breanna Clark, Browne, Sophia Amodia, and Erica Payne. The Lancers then took third overall and were second in their heat in the 4x100 relay with a 48.09 seconds mark.

Amodia took fourth overall in the 400 hurdles and second in her heat No. 3 with a time of 1:04.96. She also was 15th in the 100 hurdles (16.52). Christina Shamirian was 10th in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:34.43). Diane Lombardi took 15th in the 800 meters at 2:27.81. Rossha Harris threw 100 feet, 10 inches to place 15th in the javelin.

In the 10,000 meters final, Arielle Barragan-Steimer placed 11th in the race with a time of 42:12.73.

Lancer Derrick Shepherd (from Pasadena's Marshall Fundamental High, pictured) emerged as the No. 1 sprinter in the qualifying for the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.32 seconds, a mark that won him heat No. 2. Christian White also established the No. 1 time in the 400 meters in winning heat No. 3 at 48.76.

Steven Williams finished in an 8-way tie for first in the high jump prelims with a leap of 6-5.5.

Caleb Wood was third overall in the discus with a season-best toss of 146-11 and fourth in the javelin at 180-10.

Te'von Mitchell took sixth in the 100 hurdles and second in his heat No. 2 at 16.03. In the same race, John Lee was third at 16.08, but ninth overall. Fharhaad Zinnamon grabbed seventh in the triple jump at 46-1.

Kevin Cano placed 10th in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:11.03) while Khaleel Green took 12th in the 400 hurdles at 55.99.

Last year, the PCC women took 18th and the men 23rd as teams at the SoCal Championships. Both teams figure to finish well above those places next week. The Lancers' squads are directed by head coach Larry Wade.
