News: Men's Soccer Can't Keep Up With Roadrunners, Lose 2-1

For most of the early season, the Pasadena City College men's soccer team has carried the play against opponents. But on Tuesday, Rio Hondo College turned the tables and controlled the majority of the 97 minutes (including injury time) in defeating the Lancers, 2-1, at Robinson Stadium.

The Roadrunners (4-3-4) outshot the Lancers (1-2-3), 22-7, and had a 15-3 edge by halftime. PCC forward Luis Flores scored his team-leading fifth goal in the 16th minute on a penalty kick. The play was set up when Eric Chavez was tripped up by a Rio Hondo defender in the goalie box.

Rio Hondo responded by peppering PCC starting goalie Alex Radillo with scoring chances. In the 24th minute, Rolando Hernandez sent a 20-yard attempt off the crossbar and Alfonso Espinoza headed in the rebound to tie it. Rio Hondo tallied the winning goal just seven minutes later as Hernandez again ripped off a shot that was stopped by Radillo, but Makoto Shoji got the loose rebound and knocked it in at the goal-line.

PCC head coach Edgar Manvelyan brought in goalkeeper Gaetano Perez in the second half. It was Perez' first appearance as a Lancer since he played as a starting freshman on the 2006 Lancers. Perez proved to be an asset as he made five saves, including two acrobatic diving stops to prevent Rio Hondo scores. Perez also showed off a powerful right leg. He twice fired long kicks well over 70 yards, including one that ended up as a shot on goal. Radillo, also a sophomore but from last season, had made six saves in the first half.

The Lancers hope to snap a 3-game winless streak (0-2-1) on Friday, Sept. 27 when they host San Bernardino Valley in a 5 p.m. non-conference game at Robinson Stadium. The Wolverines will be a hard opponent as the No. 2-ranked team in the state and undefeated at 6-0-2.
