News: Two Starters Short, Water Polo Scuttled By El Camino
The importance of having Jazmine Hernandez and Scarlett Bonilla in the Pasadena City College women's water polo team lineup was never more apparent than during the Lancers match v. El Camino on Wednesday. The two key starters were out of action due to injuries as PCC could not generate much of an offense during a 15-4, South Coast Conference defeat at the Aquatic Center.
With the two freshmen playmakers out, El Camino double-teamed Lancers' top scorer Stephanie Velasco and frequently were able to create steals. The Warriors led 8-0 by halftime and coasted from that point. Velasco ended up scoring three goals in the second half, two on the power play. Velasco, from Eagle Rock High, has 33 goals in 16 matches.
El Camino (6-9, 3-3 in conference games) was led by Lynsey Alabab, who scored five goals. For PCC, Mariana Silva added a goal and two assists. The Lancers were able to total only three steals, another by-product of the absence of top defensive player Hernandez, who leads the squad with 39 steals this season.
PCC goalie Alenoush Aslanin was outstanding in the net with seven saves, three on point-blank opportunities. From Glendale High, Aslanin was often trying to stop 2-on-1 attempts within five meters of the goal.
The Lancers (2-14 overall) are winless in conference dual matches at 0-6. Next Wednesday, October 23, Pasadena hosts Mt. San Antonio in a 3 p.m. conference match (fact corrected from initial release this morning).
PCC is the host of the 2013 South Coast Conference Championship tournament to be played November 7-9 (women's games are only on the 8th and 9th, conference men's teams play 7th and 9th). PCC does not field a men's team.
