News: Badminton Sweeps 2 Matches At El Camino

Baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks once said it was a great day for a ball game, so let's play two. That's exactly what the Pasadena City College badminton team did Wednesday in scoring back-to-back, 11-0 sweeps at El Camino College.

PCC improved to 6-3 overall and 6-2 in the South Coast Conference while El Camino stayed winless at 0-8, 0-8.

The Lancers and Warriors agreed to shorten the contests in playing only to the 11 points required for a team win. By day's end, PCC 18 total individual match victories made it a clean sweep over hapless ECC (note in community college badminton, one team point for each singles, two for No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and one for No. 3 doubles).

Only two went as far as three sets with each occurring the opening game. PCC's Chloe Ding rallied to beat Kelsey Brandin, 18-21, 21-14, 21-5, in No. 1 singles while No. 5 Priscilla Lam performed a similar comeback over Tatiana Granados, 16-21, 21-10, 21-8. Overall in the two games, a pair of singles wins were tallied by Ding, Carmina Ortiz, the team's usual No. 1 player, Alejandra Palacios, and Karina Bustillo. Scoring one singles win a piece were Lam, Preline Bonifacio, Yinghong Lin and Yingwen Lin.

In doubles, The Lin twins won two matches and the squads of Ortiz-Bonifacio, Palacios and Jamie Chi, Ding-Ortiz, and Chi-Bonifacio had one victory each.

The Lancers host first-place East Los Angeles on Friday, April 11 in a 2 p.m. contest at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
