Explore Hawai'i during the second 8-week session of the Spring 2024 semester!

The Big Island of Hawai'i is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Larger than all of the other Hawaiian islands combined (hence, its nickname, "Big Island"), its sheer size and climate diversity are awe-inspiring. Thanks to the topographic effects of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the world's most massive volcanoes, the Big Island has it all: from tropical beaches and river-cut gulches with waterfalls, to lush rainforests, subalpine to polar tundra, and a restless lava-filled Kilauea caldera. Hawai'i truly embodies the striking beauty and fierce power of our natural world.

Project Pele

Project Pele (Pele refers to the goddess of volcanoes and fire and the creator of the Hawaiian Islands) is an 8-week interdisciplinary program for PCC students. Students will take 4 courses and a total of 14 transferable units. Following Spring Break, the first 4 weeks of the program will be held on the PCC campus. The last 3 weeks (not including finals week) will be conducted in the field, while traveling around the Big Island of Hawai'i. Spending time in nature (volcanoes, beaches, forests, and farms) helps us to witness for ourselves the importance of ecological relationships and the interconnectedness of species. Our English and science courses are designed to be interwoven. We will study environmental science and human impacts on nature and apply sustainability principles in our daily activities. Students will practice critical thinking while honing their writing skills, both creative and academic. Our PCC learning community will enhance our "life skills" as we learn to live, eat, explore, and have fun with "Aloha ‘āina (Hawaiian, meaning love and stewardship of the land).

Program Faculty

Erika catanese, Natural Sciences

A California girl, Professor Erika Catanese, MS, (Prof. Cat) earned her degrees from state schools: BS in Zoology from Cal Poly Pomona and Master of Science degree in Biology from Cal State Fullerton. She taught as an adjunct professor at both universities until she joined PCC in 2005.

Student-centered learning practices are what drive Erika's pedagogical passions. She finds great satisfaction in teaching and learning alongside her students. She has been involved in student engagement outside the traditional classroom for her entire career. She participated in many interdisciplinary team-taught programs, mostly with Krista Walter, to Costa Rica, Florence, Oxford, Baja, Mexico, and Hawaii, along with local trips to California’s Central Coast and the Arroyo Seco. In addition, she also regularly engages with student groups outdoors and teaches them through service learning, hiking, forest restoration/maintenance, river cleanups, and urban farming. Prof Cat feels most comfortable working with students outside of their comfort zones, finding it rewarding as they discover themselves and what they are capable of beyond the traditional classroom.

Through this extensive travel and teaching experience, Prof Cat has developed many skills, including first aid and CPR, and has overcome challenges, rendering her exceptionally adept at leading groups of students.

Krista Walter, English

Dr. Krista Walter began teaching at PCC in 1999. She earned her BA in English from the University of Michigan in 1984 and her doctorate in English from UC Irvine in 1991. While specializing in early American literature, rhetoric and composition, and critical theory, Dr. Walter also loves to teach environmental studies and ecology from a literary point of view.

Irrepressibly adventurous and well-traveled, she loves to lead groups of students on field trips where she engages them in community-based learning. Over the past 22 years, she has boldly ventured out of the conventional classroom, teaching in the Oxford and Florence Study Abroad programs.

Along with Natural Sciences Professor, Erika Catanese, Dr. Walter has also  traveled with PCC students in a program called “Steinbeck Country” focused on the natural and literary history of Big Sur and the central California Coast. She codesigned programs entitled “Discovering California” and “The Secret Lives of Trees” that took students camping locally (Malibu, San Jacinto, Palm Desert) and further (Yosemite, Sequoia, Mammoth) to study critical thinking about the environment and the human impact on different California habitats.

Guiding students on extended trips is both a passion and a skill for this teacher. Trained in first aid and safe cooking for groups, Dr. Walter is ready to travel.
