Degree vs. Commencement

A degree is awarded once you complete all academic requirements, and your diploma is issued. Commencement is the celebratory ceremony, often called “walking”, that recognizes those achievements.

Steps to Commencement

If you have not petitioned for your degree with a counselor, please do so as soon as possible before the May 7 deadline. 

You may: 


Important Reminders

  • Only students earning an associate degree are eligible to participate in commencement.
  • If you are earning a CTE Associate of Science degree (with the Certificate of Achievement), you must also petition for your certificate with the appropriate Academic Division.
  • If you are using outside coursework to meet degree requirements, you must submit official transcripts and records to PCC as soon as possible. Admissions & Records cannot review your petition without official records on file.
  • After your degree petition is submitted, you will receive an email sent to your PCC email (@go.pasadena.edu) with the subject line “TERM YEAR, Associate Degree Petition | Last Name, First Name, ID #...”

Check your PCC email (@go.pasadena.edu) for a message with instructions on how to create a Tassel account.

  • Look for an email with the subject line “Register for PCC Commencement”, Or
  • An email sent from commencement@pasadena.edu. 

The email will include a unique link and instructions to create your Tassel account.

  • Once your Tassel account is successfully created, you will receive a confirmation email with the subject line “Commencement Registration Confirmation”. 

Creating a Tassel account is required in order to: 

  • Register for commencement participation
  • Request commencement guest tickets
  • Have your name read during the ceremony
  • Receive an email notification from Grad Images after commencement to view and purchase your commencement photo proofs.

After your Tassel account is set up, you may request up to four (4) guest tickets in your Tassel profile by May 8th.

Guests without tickets (or guests who need seating in an air-conditioned space) may view the ceremony in PCC’s designated livestream viewing auditorium - CA-101.

Cultural Graduations

In addition to the main commencement ceremony, graduates are encouraged to participate in one of the Cultural Graduation Ceremonies, which are held before commencement. Additional details will be shared as they become available on the Cultural Graduation webpages.

All graduates who have registered for commencement through Tassel (see step 2) are strongly encouraged to attend the commencement rehearsal.

This rehearsal will walk you through the ceremony process so you know where to go, what to expect, and feel confident and prepared for the evening.

The ceremony will begin promptly at 7:00 pm and will last approximately two hours. Graduates and guests are expected to remain seated until the ceremony concludes.

Returning Your Academic Attire

The Collegiate Cap and Gown Company, from which academic regalia is rented, has requested that the caps, gowns and hoods be returned immediately following the reception after the commencement ceremony on Friday evening, June 12, 2026.

Return location: GM Building Lobby.

You may confirm that you have petitioned for your degree by checking your PCC email (@go.pasadena.edu) for a degree petition confirmation email. This message is automatically sent after your counselor verifies your academic progress and submits your degree petition.

  • Summer 2025 graduates: Check your unofficial transcript in LancerPoint to confirm your degree has been posted.
  • Fall 2025 graduates: Check your unofficial transcript in LancerPoint at the end of February to confirm that your degree has been posted.

Participation in the commencement ceremony is not required to earn your degree. As long as you submit your degree petition and complete all degree requirements, your degree will be awarded once all requirements are verified.

We strongly encourage you to participate in the commencement ceremony. It is a meaningful opportunity to celebrate your accomplishment with your classmates, friends, family, and the PCC community.

First, confirm that you are eligible to participate in commencement.

  • Summer 2025 graduates: Check your unofficial transcript in LancerPoint to confirm your degree has been posted.
  • Fall 2025 graduates: Check your unofficial transcript in LancerPoint at the end of February to confirm that your degree has been posted.
  • Spring 2026 and Summer 2026 degree candidates: Check your PCC email (@go.pasadena.edu) for your degree confirmation email with the subject line “(TERM) 2026, Associate Degree Petition|(Student Name & PCC ID#)” 
  • After receiving this confirmation, please wait 4-7 business days to receive your Tassel email. 

If you earned your degree or petitioned for your degree for Spring 2026 or Summer 2026 and have not received the Tassel email after the timeframe above, please reach out to the Office of Student Life.

If you have not applied for your degree, please complete Step 1: Petition for Your Degree(s) before proceeding.

Due to the stadium capacity, each graduate may request up to 4 ticketed guests. Any additional guests will be redirected to the streaming auditoriums on campus.

Only students earning an associate degree are eligible to participate in the June 2026 commencement ceremony.

Guests may enter the stadium beginning at 5:00 pm through the West entrance to Robinson Stadium, near Lot 4

All guests must present a valid ticket to be admitted.

Parking is free and available in the following locations: 

The commencement ceremony will take place rain or shine. While rain is not currently in the forecast, graduates and guests are encouraged to plan accordingly and dress for the weather.

Yes, you have to purchase a cap and gown to participate in the Commencement Ceremony.

If you are earning an additional associate degree from PCC in Summer 2025, Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and/or Summer 2026, you are eligible to participate in commencement again.

GRAD FEST is optional. It is a convenient one-stop event to take care of several commencement-related items.

At GRAD FEST, you can:

  • Order and pick up your cap, gown, and silver stole at the PCC Bookstore.
  • Pick up your academic honor stole and cord (if eligible) from the Office of Student Life (CC-105).
  • Purchase commencement memorabilia such as printed announcements, class rings, and frames.

All graduates who order a cap & gown through PCC (see step 3) will receive a silver stole.

  • Academic Honors Gold Stoles are awarded to graduates earning a cumulative GPA of 3.67 or higher across all college institutions.
    • Please check with your academic counselor to confirm your academic honor standing.
    • If you received the silver stole but qualify for the gold stole, you may exchange it at the Office of Student Life (CC-105).
  • Students may also purchase non-PCC stoles at the PCC Bookstore.
  • Additional stoles may be provided to students participating in the cultural graduation ceremonies.

Red & Gold Cords are awarded to graduates earning the Highest Honors (Summa Cum Laude) with a cumulative GPA of 4.0 across all college institutions.

If you qualify for the Highest honors, you may receive your Academic Honors Gold Stole and Red & Gold Cord through one of the following ways:

  • At GRAD FEST
  • By visiting the Office of Student Life (CC-105)
  • At the Highest Honors Pre-Commencement Reception on the day of commencement (if you plan to attend)
    • Eligible graduates will receive an email to their PCC email (@go.pasadena.edu) with details about the Highest Honors Pre-Commencement Reception.

Please note: Participation in the Honors Program alone does not qualify a student for Highest Honors.

You will receive an email notification from Grad Images after commencement to view and purchase your commencement photo proofs.

At the commencement ceremony, graduates will receive a ceremonial (prop) diploma for photo purposes.

Your official degree posting and diploma will be processed after final grades are reviewed and approved by Admissions & Records. For information on when your degree will post and when your diploma will be mailed, please visit the What to Expect webpage.
