(Kindergarten-8th grade). Topics include learning about the political and historical
beginnings of schools in the U.S., teaching standards and expectations, teaching for
equity, technology in the classroom, and learning strategies across different content-areas.
Requires 45-hour structured field practice assignment in a public elementary classroom
that represents California's diverse student population. Total of 54 hours of lecture.

EDUC 030 TEACHING AS A PROFESSION

Provides prospective teachers a beginning foundation for the teaching profession in
a growingly diverse environment. Exploration of the philosophy, history, sociology
of the American educational system and the qualities of effective and equity-oriented
teaching and learning strategies, and effective learning environment. Instructional
strategies for a diverse group of students across race/ethnicity, gender, language,
ability, and other identities. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EDUC 032 CURRICULUM FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN

Exploration of concepts, theories, and frameworks to design and implement culturally
relevant curriculum for diverse school-age children. Examination of the foundations
of teaching and learning in the U.S. schooling system and curriculum design in today's

EDUC 050 TECHNOLOGY FOR EDUCATORS

Exploration of the use of technology for today's TK-12 classroom teachers. Investigation
of technological tools for diverse classrooms through hands-on activities, classroom
observations, and interactive assignments. No credit if taken after EDUC 150. Total
of 54 hours lecture.

EDUC 100 TUTORING TECHNIQUES
1 unit
Introduction to various learning styles, tutorial strategies and techniques; selected
problems encountered by those rendering tutorial service. Recommended tutor eligibility
requirements, which include faculty referral and satisfactory score on any required
department diagnostic test. Total of 18 hours lecture.

Exploration of the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of children,
as well as effective programs and practices for working in diverse settings. Intended
for those wishing to work with school-age children. Total of 54 hours lecture.

AA-T in Elementary Education
The AA-T degree in Elementary Education is designed for future elementary or special education teachers. While earning the AA-T, you will complete your lower division coursework and have guaranteed admission with junior standing at a CSU or participating UC to complete a bachelor degree in a similar major.

Educational Aide Certificate of Achievement
The Certificate of Achievement in Educational Aide aims to prepare students for an entry-level position as educational aides, teacher assistants, or paraprofessionals in the TK-12th grade classroom. This program features a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on the knowledge and skills required to support classroom teachers to work effectively with diverse student populations. In the program, students will learn about effective communication strategies, working with diverse student populations, and the theories and practices aimed at supporting student learning. Students will also learn about the historical foundations of the U.S. schooling system, critical theories regarding teaching and learning, the various subject standards (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Science, PE, and Art), and best practices for designing student-centered and inclusive learning activities.
The program will have an explicit focus on developing students’ knowledge of diverse student populations and ability to work with teachers, students, and parents in student and equity-centered ways.
This program’s goals and objectives include:
- Students will demonstrate subject matter competency and practical knowledge of working with TK-12th grade students in a classroom setting.
- Students will be prepared to implement culturally relevant, equity-minded practices with TK-12th grade students in the classroom setting.
A Certificate of Achievement is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.
